The New and Improved Grilled Cheese Sandwich



Grilled cheese sandwiches made with doughy and unhealthy white bread and American cheese slices are a thing of the past. Now there are so many opportunities for this fast, tasty and quick (for when you really don't feel like cooking) bite to be extraordinary.

The many varieties of breads and wonderful vegan cheeses readily available makes it easy. Start adding spices and herbs and that’s when it gets really interesting.


So, last Sunday I was making grilled cheese sandwiches for my son, Christopher and myself; he wanted his with sprouted whole grains bread from Trader Joe’s and I felt like having Deland Bakery millet. Both are staples in my freezer. Also, I usually have a variety of vegan cheeses in my fridge at all times; everything from fresh Parmesan to slices to cream cheese. One of my favorite brands is Field Roast. It's imported from Greece (fancy, huh?) and is absolutely delicious. Christopher opted for the tomato cayenne and I wanted the creamy original. All healthy ingredients and no nasty chemicals or preservatives. If you can’t find that brand just check the ingredients on any vegan cheese before you buy it to make sure it has quality ingredients. Next, I added some dried oregano and basil. Then grilled them to perfection with vegan butter. If you're looking for a great tasting vegan butter Miyoko's is my personal favorite.


Try your favorite cheese, bread and spices and see what you can create. Get even more creative and add avocado, tomatoes or fresh cilantro or basil. The possibilities are limitless.
